Favorite NICKNAMES - What are yours?
It's funny I recently saw a post on here that someone used Mia as a nickname for Amelia. I found it strange because I see Mia as a name on it's own. Now I am wondering what nicknames people like since I do know people that name their children according to the nickname they will have. I am not saying I agree with this but it is a fact. Since Mia is seen as a nickname I like it however not with Amelia I don't see the connection.Mia

I'm not big on nn's, unless they occur naturally maybe. But there are a few names I like that have 'associated' nn's that I also like, though these names wouldn't necessarily be my first choices to use as fn's. On NN's: my name is Heather and it doesn't have a nn, really, and that's what I prefer in names. My siblings, Nicholas & Candis, have been called Nicky & Candi most of their lives and have had a hard time "shaking" those nicknames in their adulthood (and they're in their 40's now! lol). Some I like (though some of these "nicknames" can stand on their own as well):
Ben - Benjamin
Gus - August, Augustus, Angus
Finn - Finlay, Finnian
Gabe - Gabriel
Jude - Julian (though I'd probably use just Jude or Julian, and not one as a nn for the other...but I LOVE both! lol)
Sam - Samuel
Josie - Josephine
Ella, Ellie, Stella - Estella
Ella, Elsie, Elsa, Ellie - Elspeth
Carly - Caroline, Charlotte
Eve, Evie - Evelyn, Genevieve
Vivi (VIV-vee) - Vivian
Maisie - Mairead
Maisie, Maggie, Meg, Daisy - Margaret

I've actually done Nicknames I know: real life examples. (inc Amelia)I know an Amelia that's always called Mia as her brother couldn't say her name when he was little. I've always called the Amelia I know 'Millie / Milly', 'Milla' or 'Mills'. I've never heard of an Amelia called Amy. nn vary from person to person. Some come from very round-about ways.Or it's like they way words have changed over the centuries. You can loose entire syllables. Lia is like Mia and the M is just before the Lia influencing it. eg: Amelia - Melia - Mia is one way it could occur. We all have unconscious knowledge of the rules needed to do this.
Raher than like - ones I know around the place:Ellie for Eleanor, and I know an Elliot with nn Elli.
Izzy for Isabel and variants.
Janey for Jane.
Jon / Jonny for Jonathan and Johnny for John.
I know Jack whos name is John.
I know a Peg for Margaret, a Marg for Margaret.
Steve for Steven and Stephen.
Ben for Benjamin.
Glen for Glenys and Glenda.

Wow. That would be a pretty long list, for me. Here are a few:Dulcinea, nn Dulcie
Elspeth / Elsa, nn Elsie
Artemisia, nn Mia or Mimi
Marie, nn Mimi
Euphemia, nn Effie
Eva, nn Evie
Henrietta, nn Etta
Mary, nn Mae
Mercedes, nn MercyEdmund / Edward, nn Ned
Desmond, nn Des
James, nn Jamie
Gregory, nn RoryNot that I would ever use any of these. I just like them. I usually come at this from the other angle: I have some names that I love that I can't figure out a nice nn for it. Examle: Iphigenia, nn Iffy? Awful. Ursula, nn Ursie? Noooooo.

I like nicknames as proper names, actually. Here's some of my favourites:Lori (I would use this on it's own, or as a NN for Delores)
Harry (I would only use this on it's own)
Charlie (I prefer it on it's own, but could use it with Charles)
Ronnie (On it's own - I don't like Ronald)
Reggie (Probably on it's own, but I don't mind Reginald too much)

I agree with your Amy-for-Amelia. It's always been my tendency to take nicknames from second and third syllables, rather than firsts (a la Stacy-for-Anastasia), so I like Cole for Nicholas, Rick for Maverick, and Brie or Elle for Gabrielle. (I knew a Brie-for-Gabrielle, she was cute.) My all time FAVORITE nn is probably Carrie, though. It's just... cute.
A is for Amy who fell down the stairs, B is for Basil assaulted by bears, C is for Clara who wasted away, D is for Desmond thrown out of a sleigh... !!!!!!!!!! - Tobias, Jesse, Wyatt, Shane, Preston, Maverick, Rebel, Gibson, Shiloh, and Timber

I like these nicknames, more than the full versions;
Maggie - Magdalen, Margaret etc.
Sam - Samuel
Sid - Sidney
Will - William
Archie - Archer, Archibald
Charlie - Charles
Theo - Theodore
I used to really like Jamie for a boy, but felt James was too severe. So I explored other options, like Jamison, but after a while I began to love the name James. Now I like James more than Jamie.
