Rowan is the worst name ever, boy or girl.

It can be either, but sinse my baby male cousin has this name, it will always be a boys name to me! I think it's cute (but I'm biased!)

Rowan is a definitely a boy's name, imo. And I like it. Ariana/Arianna and Ariel are ok, but don't seem like they'll stand the test of time. The former is much better than the latter, imo, though. Arwen, OTOH, is very pretty, and not trendy/overused. :)

Unisex . . .I absolutely love Rowan on a boy (it's my second favourite after Daniel), but I have to admit to liking it on a girl as well, as I know a very nice female Rowan.Arianna is nice, but nms.Aryanna looks misspelled, and no child should be given a name with the word 'Aryan' in it (If you don't know what "Aryan" means, look it up - try searching under "Nazi philosophies").I like Ariel on a boy or a girl (I know both, and both were born before The Little Mermaid came out) and I really like Arielle (prn AH-ree-ell not AIR-ee-al).Arwen is lovely, but as Lord of the Rings is currently so popular, naming a girl Arwen would be too cutesy and pop-culturish these days. Don't worry, by the time you're old enough to have kids it'll probably be no longer so kitschy.

Rowan and Ariel are both male to me.a

Arianna / Aryanna - okay, but would prefer Ariana
Ariel - love on a boy never a girl / Arielle - okay on a girl
Arwen - pretty, my fave girl is Eowyn, though
Rowan is 100% boy for me

I love Arianna and Ariel. I think of Rowan as a boys name. It always makes me think of Rowan Atkinson, when I hear that name!

I think Rowan as a boys name, although I hear it for a lot of girls lately.I like Arianna.

Boy [m]A rowan is a tree, so besides the 'red' meaning (which is not from my language), the name is all masculine to me, and seems kind of tough and plain on a female. Besides, the rhyme with Owen and historical use for boys make it unfemme to me.Arianna: reminds me of A. Huffington, is okay but not very striking to me
Aryanna: looks like it's based on the word Aryan, which has some ugly connotations
Ariel / Arielle: I prefer the -elle spelling for a girl; nice name but reminds me too much of soap operas and the Little Mermaid though
Arwen: is nice, although the films will probably date it; I personally know an Arwen who is about 27 and the name doesn't seem strange or fanciful. It's quite nice - chazda

I love Rowan both as a girl's name and as a boy's name.Arianna / Aryanna - I love Arianna, but I'm not too crazy about Aryanna. My preferred spelling/variant is Ariana

Ariel / Arielle - Not my style at allArwen - I love it, but would never use it

Rowan is a name that can go either way. In ENgland there is a tv personality (male) called Rowan Atkinson. I love Arwen. Ariel, is really a boys name, but being a small child when the little mermaid was new i would associated it with a girl

Lol Mr. Bean and Blackadder!! I forgot about thatbb

I don't get it.......Ariel (if prononced like I think it is) was used as a name for a little mermaid princess in a VERY well-known Walt-Disney Movie. I don't see how anyone could name there son a name that is most know as a human/fish princess that lives in the ocean. Aren't yall scared that he would be picked on? Elizabeth :)

The reason many people prefer Ariel on a boy is because it traditionally is a boy's name (check the link for its history). It was not widely used on girls until very recently, and a lot of that is from the Disney character you mentioned. And a lot of people on here (me included) prefer traditionally boy's names on boys. Also, looking at Ariel's popularities, you can see that there are still some parents who name their sons this, despite the movie. I think that by teaching him about the historical and other male namesakes of this name, you can counteract the mermaid association (which is very recent compared to the other associations) enough to make the name tolerable for him.

But people he associate with may not know the histoyand he will either end up having to explain it to every person he meets or be slightly picked on. Don't you think? :D Elizabeth :D

I know thatI say the same thing about all the other numerous originally boy's names that have been taken by the girls that I like. At least Ariel is one of those with several good male namesakes to use; one current male namesake that many people will probably know is Ariel Sharon (which I forgot to mention on the original post).

Who is Ariel Sharon? Elizabeth :D

Ariel Sharon, PM of Israel...
Ariel is tradtionally a boys' name picked on in the US probably, UK probably for a while, Canada maybe, elswhere, I doubt anyone would care.

I don't know why the USA has to be like that. For being such a young country we don't seem so open about a lot of things. If someone wants to name thier daughter something like Rowan people think it's cute & creative, but if they want to name thier boy Ashley people think he'll get ridiculed. I'm not mmeaning this about every American but if I were to mention I think Ashley is a great name for boy to anyone who doesn't know much about names they'd laugh. But I hear comment like, 'isn't that a creative name' when heard that someone named thier daughter Rowan. I'm not trying to be negative about girls w/ boys names, to each his own, but shouldn't things be equal?

yea but we can't help the people we live aroundI guess it's more accepted because now tom-girls are becoming more and more accepted

That's good.

Luckily our children won't only associate with 13 year old who know nothing about history or anything that happened before the 1990's. Even 10 year olds I know are a little more knowledgeable and open-minded than that.

I like it better on a boy but I don't mind it on a girl-kind of cute.

Rowan is nmsaa, but better on a boy.Arianna is nice, Aryanna is misspellt to me.
Ariel is boy name. Arielle to me is strange. It's still a boy name (same sound than Ariel) but misspellt. The feminine form is Ariela.
I love Arwen.Claire

I pronounce Ariel and Arielle differentlyAriel's AIR-ee-el and Arielle's air-ee-EL.I believe most English-speakers would pronounce Arielle by accenting the last syllable. It wouldn't be confused with Ariel at all.I do like Ariela too, btw. Ariella's OK, but I prefer the more uncluttered Ariela spelling. I pronounce Ariela / Ariella AIR-ee-EL-ah.Miranda

Rowan... Boys name, please keep it boys name....Arianna : pretty but nms
Ariel / Arielle : Very Walt Disney, but it's okay

I see Rowan as male, but I'm getting used to it as female.
I like Arwen

Rowan is all-boy to me, and please help keep it that way!Arianna Aryanna -okay, but not my style.
Ariel / Arielle -Ariel is a boy's name to me, and should only be used as such in my opinion. Arielle is a good feminine form, though.
Arwen -okay, but not a personal favorite.

Well, Rowan to me is a boys' name, but I don't mind it on girls either. I would use Rowena instead - I know it's not the feminine form, but is close enough in sound.Arianna / Aryanna - OK, but not a fave. I definitely prefer it spelled Arianna
Ariel / Arielle - Ariel for a boy is lovely. Arielle is a pretty name, and for all the names mentioned, I'd choose this one.
Arwen - nice sound, but nowadays when the LoTR is in, I wouldn't use it. The connection is just too stong, and therefore I'd avoid it. I'm sure you wouldn't want to name your kid Han Solo either...
