HelpSloan / Sloane WDYT?
I really like this for a girl. I've liked this name since I first saw (dating myself!) Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Mia Sara played the character, Sloan. It's so mysterious and sexy. I really like it, but... part of me thinks that it's just too unfeminine. What do you think?

I like the spelling Sloane for a boy only. I'm probably being a name snob, but Sloan/Sloane just feels so masculine to me. (Maybe b/c it rhymes w/Stone?) If you really like it, maybe you could use it as a mn.

I think it's too masculine for a girl (I didn't like it in Ferris Bueller's Day off either), even if it's listed as either a boy or girl name. I think most last-name sounding names sound better for boys.

You couldn't use it in Britain, especially on a girl, because of the prostitute assocations. That might not be a problem depending on where you live. I also don't find the sound very attractive ... sorry.

I think its actually pretty nice for a girl. Somewhat masculine, but not too bad.

Please clarify your use of the word "trashy"
I have no associations with the name Sloan/Sloane that would lead me to believe that it is a "trashy" name (whatever that means) especially since it is listed as being a name for both females and males in the BtN search. Please clarify your position.

Its a name that is popular in a lower socio-econmic class. That's the reason it's thought to be trashy. Certain names will be indentified as trashy or classy by the socio-econmic group that uses the name.
There are several names in BtN that I consider trashy. Madison for a girl, Kayley, Kayleigh, etc. They are names that I feel that I would see more often in a trailor park. And since trailor parks, and the people who live there, have such a negative stereotype, I wouldn't use them. Why on earth should I limit the way my daughter is percieved through using a name like that? If you don't believe that your daughter would be affected by using a "lower-class" name, you're wrong. Several studies have been done showing that person with the same qualifications who has a lower class name is less likely to get the job then a person with a "higher-class" name.
