Re: Lots of Catalan names...
in reply to a message by Cristy
Hi, Cristy! Glad you liked it!
This list of you has many Spanish names, but that's because there are lots of people with Spanish names, specially in the capital, Barcelona. Where I live, we mostly speak Catalan and use Catalan names.
(pronunciations according on this site's guide)
Isabel - it isn't really a popular name between children, it's pronunced ee-zuh-BEL (as in Belle). I love it.
Marina (muhr-EE-nuh)- quite popular, really reminds of the sea, that is "mar" in Catalan (Mar (MAr) is a well known name too).
Sofia (soo-FEE-uh)- not really popular in Catalunya, maybe because it's the Spanish queen's name? I love it but could never use because of it, don't know if you understand me...
Anna (AN-nuh)- so overused, at least were I live, I can't even count how many Annas I know! I don't specially like it.
Natalia - we write it Natàlia, pron. nuh-TA-lee-a, not overused, but usual.
Tiago - it isn't "exactly" Catalan, since Santiago isn't, but it's better than Santi, the normal nn for Santiago in Spanish, since in Catalan we make the diminutives by the end (does it make sense?: Elisabet, Bet; Ignasi, Nasi; Isabel, Bel) or contracting the name (Joan (male's name), Jan; Lluís, Llis; Josep, Jep- Pep...).
Samuel -I have never met a Samuel...
Alejandro - Spanish, Catalan form is Alexandre. I guess its really popular, but where I live there are Alexandre-s or Àlex-s.
Joaquim (joo-uh-KEEM)- This is really Catalan, but not popular at all in children (in adults it is quite popular). I love the nn Quim (KEEM), now used sometimes as a given name.
I LIKE:
Olívia (oo-LEE-vi-uh)- never met one, I like it
Carolina (cuhr-oo-LEE-nuh)-never met one, neither, it's nms.
Lorena- usually Spanish, not popular where I live.
Maria (muh-rEE-uh) - most popular name always, I love it, but its sadly overused.
Eva (e as in grey without the -y, eh-buh)-yay, I like it! :-) Not very popular, but it doesn't surprise anyone.
Elena/Helena (uh-LE-nuh)- I prefer it with -h, it isn't really popular. My piano teacher had a baby a few weeks ago and they named the little girl Helena!
Laia (LA-ya) - now is mostly used as a full name, and it's quite popular. I like it a lot.
Lídia (LEE-di-uh) - I like it a lot, my mum wanted to name me this, but there's an actress whose name is Lydia-and-my-last-name, so...
Ruben - usually Spanish, but it can be Catalan if you write it Rubèn, I don't like it at all, sorry.
Carlos - Spanish too, Catalan is Carles. Not popular here, and neither Carles (even if I have an uncle and a cousin named Carles!)
Felipe - Spanish prince's name, don't like it at all...
Isaac (ee-ZAK) - love it! Not popular, I have a far cousin (?) named Isaac.
Jose - Spanish for Joseph, in Catalan Josep. The most overused name on earth, I think. in my Catalan name's book (from early '80s), says that in 1975 25% of Spanish males of more of 15 years old were named Jose or variants... There are lots of nn: Josep-Pep, Pitu, Jep, Xicu...
Miguel -Spanish, is Miquel in Catalan. I like Miquel (my cousin's name, he's 6 but it isn't really popular in children), but not Miguel.
Daniel (duh-nee-EL)- it's pk, quite popular but not overused.
Well, hope it clarifies pronunciations, and feel free to ask if you find some other you like (my email is in the profile if you want)!!
