Indeed it is the fem. version of the Greek name Alexandros , which meant "defending men" .
You might want to check your school library for references on Alexander of Macedonia, the Greek emperor who spread hellenism in all the way to India during the 4th century BCE . Several cities throughout the region still bear his name (Alexandria , Iskenderum, etc.). In Pakistan one still finds ethnicities (Kalash, Kafirs) who consider themselves descendants of Alexander and who practice Hellenic-influenced pagan religion. Also, Ghandara sculpture (found in Pakistan, India, etc) was heavily infuenced by Alexander 's legacy. The Talibans in Afganistan are today are doing their best to tear down all surviving architectural remnants from that period. But I digress...
