[Opinions] Pagan
Yes, I'm serious.
My Brother is home from uni and his college put out a magazine with everyone in the college and a little paragraph about each of them. There was a girl named Pagani asked at work and they seemed to think it had Witchcraft overtones,Dictionary.com defines it as–noun
1. one of a people or community observing a polytheistic religion, as the ancient Romans and Greeks.
2. a person who is not a Christian, Jew, or Muslim.
3. irreligious or hedonistic. WDYT?

It's no different than using ChristianI still remember a newspaper article I read that featured a woman named Christine and her daughter, Pagan :D

I like it. I've known of one child, also a girl, called Pagan and her parents were uninterested in religion of any sort. I guess they either chose it for the sound, or it might've been a family surname.

Found thisFound this in Withycombe. Apparently it's got a long history as a (male) name:"Latin paganus, originally "rustic", "villager", later "heathen". It was introduced into England by the Normans, and it soon became common. The surnames Pagan, Pain(e) and Payne testify to its popularity. It did not, however, survive the Reformation as a christian name."It then gives a list of records of the name, starting with a Pagan born(?) in 1086.

Yikes. I wonder if it is from another language, though, where it might mean something totally different.

It's no more inappropriate than Christian. And I hate Christian as a name too.

Pagan is a character in the Ann Tyler book, "The Amateur Marriage". his mother was a counter-culture type.

I don't like the connotation of it. But the word itself, I like how it sounds. But no I would never use it as a name.

It's terrible. Really terrible.

That is possibly, no it is the worst name I ever heard! Pagan is very very evil, witchy and dark sounding. It ranks right up there with Demon which is just as bad if not worse!!

It's very obvious that you know nothing about actual Pagans.

As a Pagan, I find this statement to be extremely offensive. I do not worship the devil, nor do I even believe in the devil.
I don't like the name Pagan, because I don't think religions should be used as names. I also don't like the name Christian.

Actually, pagan originally just meant "rural person". And even if you take it in the newer sense of non-Christian, that is not quite the same as being a demon ... Or I myself am floating around in a demonic fashion as I type :-)

The writer Pagan Kennedy is quite well known in some circles, though it should be pointed out that her parents named her Pamela and she changed it to Pagan herself:http://www.bloomsburyusa.com/Authors/default.asp?id=1352&cf=0I think that most people who would name a child Pagan would be aware of its meaning and use it precisely because it is avant garde and they believe it will NOT be used by the general middle-class in the USA. At this point in history, they are probably right -- but if one of their daughters becomes really famous, instead of just very mildly famous like Pagan Kennedy, it has the sort of sound that a lot of average parents who have little concern about "meanings" could find attractive.

Eh. Even though I have a bit of a soft spot for the belief system, I have to admit that as a name it has a very unattractive sound. I wouldn't use it, nor would I use Christian or anything else similar to that. (I can't even bring myself to joke that Buddhist would be a fine name :P)

Really, really bad.

I don't like Pagan.. it sounds okay but there are better alternatives.Though I don't think Christian is a bad name...call me bias..

It's as bad as Christian  Would never use either

Personally, I think that "a person who is not a Christian, Jew, or Muslim" is one of the stupidist definitions I've ever heard.

Agree with Array that, in theory, it's OK, but personally, I wouldn't use Christian any more than I'd use Pagan. The meanings are irrelevant; I just don't get why you'd use a religion name as a person name.

In theory, if Christian can be used, Pagan can, too. That said, I think it's horribly unattractive and tryndee sounding, aside from having a perjorative connotation in many people's minds.Array
