The song is the main reason I think the name actually kind of suits a girl or woman. It sounds strong and bright, and it means 'river' -- the song even refers to the Rio Grande (too bad the noun is gendered masculine in Spanish). On a boy, it would sound very Spanish or Latin American to me, even though I have never been exposed to that usage.

Anyway, I personally think it's a bit silly to use it on an anglo girl in the US, because of Duran Duran.. I never would, and I'd laugh if a peer of mine did. To me, it'd be kind of like someone who saw this post naming a girl Chazda: artificial, meaningless, and copycat. Rio is sort of a retro-wannabe-cool name to me.

Probably it's only my own generation who might think of it that way, and the name will prove to be really flattering on a younger Rio.

I think it's really cool for a boy, but I don't like it for a girl.

Rio sounds better on a boy to me, especially since it is a "masculine" noun from what I learned in the Spanish class that I had in high school (in general the "o" ending for a noun specifies that it is masculine in Spanish).

It definitely has a nice sound. I prefer it on a boy though. I also really like River, preferably for a boy.

Rio is only good on a boy. I wouldn't use it, but I would hate seeing it on a girl.

It sounds way too masculine for a girl, for one. Secondly, I'm not fond of it even on a boy; I just don't like the sound. Thirdly, it sounds especially trendy and pretentious for a girl.

Well, when I was 14 and in love with Duran Duran in the 80's, I thought this would be the coolest name ever for a girl-LOL! Now of course I'm an adult and don't think it's so cool anymore. :)

I like the meaning, river, but there are a couple of namesakes I don't like - the city Rio de Janeiro and the terribly cheesy Duran Duran song Rio. I prefer names that are primarily place names if they have some significance to the user, but another problem is that Rio is sort of a mixed bag as a city - not the kind of drop dead beautiful place you'd want to name a kid after if it didn't have any special signficance.

It reminds me too much of Rio Ferdinand, the footballer.

I can't imagine a Judge Rio, and I can't imagine a Judge with a name, I wouldn't use it.
