[Opinions] Beryl?
My wife loves the name Beryl. I really don't.
Let's have a vote - who here doesn/doesn't like it?

I don't care for it. I think it's pronounced like BURR-uhl (makes me think of Milton Berle) but when I see it, I want to say BARE-uhl, sounds like barrel, rhymes with Meryl (as in Streep). Ack.

I love the name alot!!! At first I didn't see anything wrong with it, but now that I see that if the child is overweight, then he would get teased for being a Barrel. But even though it had that bad association, I still love the name!
I like it, but . . .
. . . I agree with Reyanna, having known a guy at school who was teased mercilessly because his rather rotund mother was named Beryl (barrell). And that's in Australia where the pronunciation is much less like Barrell than it would be in America!
Pity - beryls are a lovely jewel. If she likes jewel names, what about Topaz, Ruby, Opal, Pearl, Coral?
. . . or there's Onyx (just kidding :-D)

Hm. I hadn't thought of that. Ugh. Good point.

I like but I don't think to barrell since English isn't my mother tongue...
What about Peril, Perel (peh-ril, peh-rul, peh-rl, "eh" being like "men"), the Yiddish forms of Pearl?

Peril . . .
. . . means "imminent danger" in English! Pity, because it's a nice sound.

lol it means the same thing in French, but I hadn't noticed it even in my own language because in French it's really 'pair-eel' with looooong vowels, while in Yiddish the "e" is much shorter and you almost don't hear the "i"... The "r" is also different, somewhere between a rolled r and a "kh" like aCHtung... But on paper they are too close.
How about Caryl or Daryl or Meryl or anything but that :)

ROFL!
I agree with Reyanna... too close to barrel.
Seems like she'd get teased as "barrell". I don't like it.

I hate it. No offence. Old lady-ish.
