[Opinions] Jonas
I'm curious about what people picture when they hear the name, especially from what Mirfak said. For me, I picture a strong man, old, weather-beaten. A sea-captain. Wise. That's the reason I love the name so much - it's a name that to me has been tested throughout the generations. Whenever I read about a Jonas, it is a strong character - as opposed to other names. However: What are others impressions of it? I won't be swayed, but I'm curious."Finally: Am I the only person who likes names that remind her of past generations, and the elderly? Miriam, Helen, Ezra, Judith - all bring to mind strong people, all old, but strong and wise. I picture age with wisdom and experience, something to respect. It seems as if others see age and run for the hills.

I really like it. I've never met one to this day, so it's refreshing. ¡VIVA ESPAÑA!

I totally agree! That's exactly what I picture. An old, strong sea-captain. The name just sounds like that...and...I love it. It's such a nice name.I love some "old-people" names, like Helen, Judith, Maxine. I agree about the wisdom aspect, as well.
Good insight.

Well, I like the name Howard. I think that lands me squarely into the "liking elderly names" territory. Ditto Miriam, Edna, Yolanda, Agnethe, Gordon, Wallace, Arthur... none of them sound particularly youthful to me. :-) Nothing wrong with that, I don't think. There are some 'old' names that I think are just hideous, though--Mildred and Beatrice are two of my token examples--and would like to see disappear forever. But I'd also like to be rid of things like Isabelle and Adriana, so it's not exclusively a long history or even being dated that irks me.I don't have much of a vision when it comes to Jonas, though the feel is a bit 'old.' It reminds me of Biblical names (even though I see it's not exactly Biblical itself; huh) like Jeremiah, Joshua, Moses, Noah, Abraham, whatever else.

I absolutely LOVE the name Jonas. It was top on my boy-name list through two pregnancies (both girls). It's almost Biblical (Jonah) with a more respectable, grown-up feel. I don't think so much of a sea captain, but the rest of your description is like mine. I think of a very strong, dependable guy who's in his early forties but with the health and vigor of someone much younger. He loves canoeing, fishing, building log cabins, and mending fences on his horse farm. He works very hard, has no real vices, and wouldn't dream of cheating on a business deal or playing hookey from his park ranger job. He has a slight granola look about him, but more Sierra Club/Nature Conservancy and no pot-smoking EarthFirst stuff.

I always think of The Giver which is still one of my favorite books. I've probably read it three dozen times. I like older names (obviously). I really like Judith, I've recently put it on my own list. Ezra seems to be getting very popular lately, and dosen't have an attractive sound to my ears. Helen and Miriam are okay, but not great to me.Rosemary.Pearl: 8/11/06

For some reason, Jonas makes me think of a young, very sweet, kind-hearted, caring, and a bit shy boy. Not that I don't see it as a strong name, too - to me, those charasteristics are not signs of weakness. Anyways, overall it seems like a very "young" name to me. You're not alone with the age thing - I absolutely adore "old", retro-chic names because I find many of them sophistocated and respectful.

I also like "elderly names". That is old names which are not popular now. I like Miriam, Ellen, Judith. Ezra just sounds too exotic for me.Jonas is a very popular name in Sweden. So it just makes me think of a teenage boy or a young man. A Jonah otoh, is a probably a little boy. This more American version is more trendy.- She said he made a racial slur!
- Racial? She is Swedish!
- Maybe he called her Meatball.Equality never goes out of style.

Jonas makes me think of someone that is overweight. I like some names that remind me of old people, such as Walter. Miriama and Ezra I also like, but they don't make me think of older people. However, there are quite a few names I don't like because they sound "old."

I love the name Jonas. But my DH doesn't because of some movie he saw.I also love the 'elderly' names... ie Henry, Helen, Jane, Hazel, Cordelia, Edith, Tilly.

I picture a boy with more strength than he knows he has--but then, I immediately think of The Giver. You know, just today I was thinking of how handsome Jonas Allen would be.I, too, like names that sound like the old. They're strong--they've done things. Trust Bettie before Rylea, if you know what I mean. Because Bettie sounds like she struggled to become a nurse and married her sailor after waiting for him at sea, but Rylea had everything handed to her on a silver platter while riding around in her mother's overly-large SUV. And Bettie's probably a lot more fun to talk with, while we're at it. ;)On the other hand, I like names that haven't really been used for anyone lately, old or young, but that's because of the character that comes along with the name. It's the same sort of idea, I think, except they're not necessarily old--they're just interesting, strong, and not the flavour of the month.Array
