[Opinions] WDYTO Scout (more)
When I first read To Kill A Mockingbird, I didn't like the name. Now that I'm rereading it, I think it's kind of cute. Not necessarily a FN choice for me, but maybe a MN.
What do you think of the name? If you like it, any combos you can make from my list?
TIA :)
Take what you need while there's time
The city will be earth in a short while
If I'm not mistaken it's been in flames
You and I will escape to the seaside.

Whenever anyone brings up Rumer, Scout, or Tallulah I automatically think that Demi Moore did it first and probably did it best, or as best as one can. The primary reason given for Scout has seemed to be To Kill a Mockingbird, but right off the bat I always rememeber the Moore/Willis kids.
I think the general interest in To Kill a Mockingbird is overdone anyway, kind of like Catcher in the Rye. Decent books, sure, but nothing I usually gush over--or would name my children after. I've read a lot of other things that have moved me much more or have made a longer lasting impact on me, so personally I find the nicknamey tribute to be a little boring.

I adored TKAM but...
I dislike Scout as a full name and first name. First time I heard the name Scout was when I heard it was one of Bruce Willis' daughter's names. But then I read To Kill A Mockingbird and now its grown on me a little since I love the book and I liked Scout as a character. I agree with mirfak though, I think its kinda harsh sounding but I think its cute as a nn or mn (I know that's kind of contradictory but thats just my opinion. I looked at your name list and here are the ones I like and think would sound ok (most are just three syllable which imo, fit most single syllable mns and I tried to pick out the more feminine names as I think Scout sounds kind of tom-boyish and would be better with a more feminine mn):
Imogen
Aurora
Delilah
Eleanor
Emerson
Evangeline
Genevieve
Giselle
Guinevere
Helena
Ilana
Iona
Katrina
Marina
Naomi
Safira
Tatiana
Valerie

I actually dislike it ... a LOT. It's worse than Piper. Very harsh sounding to my ears, like a scraping sound. I think of scraping grit off a curved metal surface - sskowt, sskowt, sskowt. And it's trivializing - a scout is usually childlike - overeager, small; the verb is really only used facetiously in my experience ("Let's scout out that burger place for lunch").
Sorry for going on and on, I just enjoy coming up with explanations =) If you like it, you like it - I doubt I'll change your mind, just let it be a data point for you that a few folks like me may cringe at the name until they get to know the person.

I've never liked it. I just don't see anything appealing about it.
I love the name, as a nn. I believe, I dont have my book right next to me at the moment, but 99% positive that Scout is her nn and her fn is Louise. I have started to love Louise in the last couple of years, and recently took a really loving to the book - I didnt like it so much in junior high when I had to read it.
Anyway, I now say that if I ever could, I would name my daughter Louise, and probably use Scout as a nn. As a nn, I am sure something would come into mind, but Scout seems like a harsh mn if you have more gentle fn.
Edit: I just saw that it was Jean Louise...but I have to disgree with the others that thought this was so much better. I'd still stick with what I posted.

Harper Lee didn't intend it as a 'real' name; I don't see it as one either.
This may be the TKaM fan in me...
...but I think Scout is a really cute name.
However, Scout was only the character's NN in the book, so that kind of turns me off liking it as a FN. But, since you're considering it for MN status-- I say it gets the green light from me. (And it doesn't hurt that I pretty much think anything goes in the MN spot.) I also think it would make a groovy NN. :o)
(Honestly, I love *all* the names in that book, but I just want to mention that I love Scout's full name, Jean Louise. But I reckon that's off-limits on a real child, as giving a hypothetical girl almost the exact same name as a book character is kind of tacky, IMO. :P)

But you can dip your feet
Every once in a little while.

Clippy, I love your signature!
I was actually thinking of putting that exact same part of the song as my sig, but I didn't.

Oh, thanks!
I've been thinking about changing it, though, just for a little variety. :P

I absolutely adore that book, it's my favorite of all time.
Scout is a cute name, but I can't really see it on a person. Maybe as a NN. A MN would be nice I could possibly see it as one.
Harper Scout? :)

I have never liked it, not even as a nn, as it's used in the book. It just seems stupid, like a generic "bud" "hoss" or "son." I wouldn't even name a dog Scout, not evena hunting dog.
