Hi, I can't seem to find any detailed information on my daughters name. Your site doesn't even recognize it. Does anyone know the proper origin? I know it is a Swahili name. Her name is Adia

My daughters name is also Adia. When I was in college, we had two nun activists come and speak to our group. They were talking about the meanings of names and mentioned this one. They said that it is Swahili and means Gift or present from God. It is used in the Bible and also referred to as Sunday (the 7th day when God rested). I hope that this helps. I think that your daughter has the most beautiful name, and I am sure that just like my daughter she is a true Gift from God!!!

I don't know any Swaheli, but I agree that "gift from God" is indeed a very beautiful meaning to that name.
In the bible you won't find ADIA though. There is ADA (adornment), but I don't know in what language ADA od ADIA may be refered to as the 7th day. Maybe Swaheli?Andy ;—)

i found a source saying it is Hausa (a language and people living in the north of Nigeria) and a source saying it is Swahili, but both say the meaning is 'gift'.here are the links:http://www.babynamesworld.com/profile.php?seostats=1&name=Adia
(this website says Adia is Swahili)http://www.tzschoeckel.de/fnamesa.htm
(this website says Adia is Hausa, note: 'ein Geschenk' is 'a gift' in German, thus same meaning)http://www.uiowa.edu/~africart/toc/people/Hausa.html
(this website is about the Hausa people if you are interested)
