[Opinions] Re: Helen
in reply to a message by Ceara Brede
My middle name is Ellen and my sister's name is Elanor, so I'm partial to those variations, but Helen would be on my favourites list if it wasn't my Aunt's name. It has a nice, soft, gracious sound to it. The only drawback is the lack of an obvious nickname (I like names which have the option of a silly-affectionate nickname - I got Kriskringle from Christine and my sister gets Ella-Nella). I suppose you could use Ellie, Nellie, Lennie or even Lelly, Hallie or Holly.
. . . anyway, I like it! :-)

thought Elanor was from Eleonora?!
Eleanor may or may not be a form of Helen - its origin is disputed/uncertain (check the hyperlink for all of the details).
In my sister's case, in fact, Elanor is totally unrelated to Helen or Eleanor - my parents gave it to her in honour of the flower name in Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. In Tolkien's Elvish, 'el' means 'star' and 'anor' means 'sun' - the flower is the Sunstar, the Golden Flower of Lothlorien.
