Topaz is a very interesting name that people will notice because it'll stand out. I don't think its over the top at all, I think its just right.

I like it =) I like it as much as all the other gemstone names
but I wouldn't use it, because it's just a bit .. not "classic" enough for me I think, the fact that it's an unusual name doesn't really matter.

I like it, especially with Topsy as a nickname. It reminds me of Topaz Mortmain of I Capture the Castle, who is an awesome (if eccentric) character. Plus, it's my mum's birthstone, so I think of it as "for her" in a way, too.
