There's the River Camel in Cornwall, which has many Arthurian associations, and there was also Camulodunum in Essex which is now, I think, Colchester ... in both cases these are very ancient names, maybe Celtic if we're lucky, and the meaning might well be lost. Or it might be one of those doublets: Let's pretend that in my language the word for river is gloob. You come in as a conqueror and point to the local river, asking me what it is. I say "Gloob", and you think I've given you a name instead of a word and start calling it the River Gloob. Works for the Don and the Avon ...

I don't know if Camelot has the same origins as these two words, but I wouldn't be surprised. And a geographical dictionary might be a good place to look, if you've got access to one.
