While I couldn't locate a specific reference source for the meaning of the surname "Garris", I'm going to say that this appears to be a variation of the surname "Garrison" (much as "Harris " is a variation of "Harrison ").

Garrison (and most likely Garris) means "son of Gerard (or son of Gerald )". Both Gerard and Gerald were personal names introduced into England by the Normans.
