Of the two,
Ellen sounds far more interesting to me. Perhaps because I've yet to meet a little girl named
Ella, whereas I went to school with two girls named
Ellen and know another in middle school--so my positive associations with
Ellen are more concrete.
Ella's one of those names where I know it's out there and overused like no other (save
Grace, ha), while
Ellen remains hip, grounded, and a bit counter-culture to me;
Ellen's just hanging out, being cool for the people who want it to be--it doesn't care whether or not it's revived any time soon, because it's confident in its cool factor. I can see a young
Ellen with hair dyed unnatural colours and a strong sense of independence; I don't feel that so much with
Ella.
I really am sorry that
Ella's so common, myself; I love
Ella Fitzgerald enough that if it wasn't, I'd use it in her honour. However, knowing that there're so many little yuppie kids whining for ice cream while wearing names like
Ella Marie kills any love I might have for it.
