[Opinions] Names I'm surprised arn't coming back in style?
With a resurgence of old fashioned names coming back in style, there's some names I wonder why they arnt coming back. One is Ethel. With Evelyn and Eleanor coming back, why not Ethel? Also the name Kirk sounds ripe for a comeback, as many K boy names are becoming popular. Also with names like Cadence and Collins getting more popular for girls, why are names like Candace and Cynthia, which sounds very modern, why arnt they coming back?

I don't think that Candace or Cynthia sound modern, but considering they are vintage, it might seem weird that they did not resurge with the other vintage names.
I expected Archibald to return since Archie did, Betty to come back since Etta did, or perhaps Celine because of its resemblance to Selena in sound.

Kirk and Candice and Cynthia were popular a generation or two ago, and generally a name needs to have been out of fashion longer than that before it starts to come back noticeably.
Ethel is dead because it deserved to die.

Eleanor has Ellie, Ella or Nora as a nickname.
Evelyn has Evie.
Ethel does not have a "cute" popular shortening, so doesn't fit the trend.
I think Cynthia will come back, but Candace isn't old enough yet.

Ethel is ugly. I think Eleanor and Evelyn are unattractive too, but they're not as objectively ugly; they have a certain elegance to them that Ethel is missing.
Candace and Cynthia are not ripe for a comeback yet; it hasn't been 100 years. I also think Candace may have been too much of a fad with no staying power. Cynthia will come back when it's time.
I'm not sure it's been long enough for Kirk either, but it does sound a lot like Clark, which is rising in popularity. I wouldn't be surprised if it spiked soon.

Ethel is associated with I Love Lucy. That's probably why. Cynthia might actually come back after Cynthia Erivo's mass popularity from Wicked.
Unfortunately, Evelyn and Eleanor are so common that I can't get behind them anymore. I know six Evelyns and three Eleanors. My name is Scarlett, and please, let's get that out of the top 100 again! I'm so sad about it's popularity :(. I don't want it to be the next Mia or Emma or Sophia :(.

In general, Ethel is not seen very charitably. It's not just another "old fashioned" name like Eleanor or Evelyn, most people think it is actively horrible. It was a trendy fad name of older generations and often those don't stand the test of time. That's probably why it's not coming back.
In my area, Candace is still considered boring-dated, like Jennifer. It's a mom name now. I'm in my 40s and grew up with literally dozens of Candaces (spelled in almost any way you can dream of). Once this crop of Candaces become grandmas, it could come back. Give it 20 years.
Cynthia could come back a bit, especially with the rising interest in names like Luna, Athena, Thea, and Theodora. But maybe "Cindy" is still seen as outdated? Maybe people figure if you're gonna go for a moon-goddess name, might as well pick Luna (also, interesting note, I can't believe how few Lunas are actually out there, it's the #10 name but was only used 7,811 times last year?? Wild).
The sound of Kirk is pretty different from the currently in-vogue K-names for boys, that could be working against it.

Ethel is probably not coming back in an age where we’re trying to switch to electric cars, since it also reminds one of gasoline.
Sadly, I doubt this would be a deterrent for most Americans.
I forgot, it does sound like Ethonal!
I like Ethel, Candace, and Cynthia. I can't imagine why they aren't coming back.
Agree 100%.
I think we’ll see Ethel rise in popularity while “old fashioned” feminine names are coming back. Candace and Cynthia have always been favorites of mine, so I’m shocked these haven’t maintained popularity either! I also think Kirk is a great name, strong but simple, easy to spell and pronounce, would love to see it used more.
