[Facts] Afton in Utah
In Utah, the name Afton was very popular for girls born in the early 20th century, peaking at #11 in 1914. My question is, why? Most Utahns are Mormon, and Joseph Smith married his first wife in Afton, New York, so perhaps that may be a factor?

Some of this is just the extra propensity that LDS parents have to seek out less common names. The town of Afton, Wyoming, is the center of the Star Valley in the far western part of that state and was originally settled by Mormons from Utah in the 1880s. That place name also may have made Afton easier for LDS parents to bring the name to mind in the early 20th century.
