While I'm not German, I did read that Catholic Germans and Protestant Germans traditionally used different names. For example, Maria was more common among Catholics, while Protestant tended to prefer Marie. (Of course, there was plenty of overlap, but some names were specific to either Catholics or Lutherans.)
