I'm reading Captain Corelli's Mandolin and wondering the same. Is it a real name or is it made up based on a word relating to his character?
For instance, according to myth, mandrake is a plant which when uprooted screams, killing anyone who hears it. An apt analogy of Mandras' descent into darkness after leaving home.
