[Surname] Re: Zinzendorf and Schleiermacher
in reply to a message by Getb
Zinzendorf is the name of a place in Bavaria and Schleiermacher is the name of a weaver, more specifically a maker of veils.

So "Schleier" means "veil" and "zinzen" means...? I mean, "Dorf" means "village". Thanks, do you think I need to post zinzerdorf in the forums of the place name site?

Zinzen is probably just s variant of Zinsen, tribute, taxes, rent. It's also a surname by itself.

Thanks! So, Zinzendorf would be the village's tax collector?

No Zinzendorf is a particular village. Why I don't know. It was built as rental housing, it was given as tribute, it was a tax collection point for travelers, no idea why. There's almost no information on it other than the name and location.
