It comes from the same Latin word as 'clear' and 'clarify'. I prefer Clare, that spelling only, and would use it IRL, but I do like Clara as long as it is pronounced CLAHra, not with the Clar- rhyming with air. Or, indeed, if Clara rhymes with Sarah.
