[Opinions] Re: "Low rent" names
in reply to a message by )(
Not criticising you for posting this because I think it's something we all perceive, whether we want to or not. I just wanted to observe how the terminology shifts around it. When I first joined this board people used to freely describe names as "tacky" or "classy." I feel like people stay away from them both now. We also stay away from "low rent" but I do feel like that's a way to try to be a bit gentle around the concept.Again, not judging. It's just interesting. I wonder if there is a way to explore our perceptions on this level without being offensive. For that to be possible, we would have to exist in a context without social stigma at all. So we'd either have to live in a utopia, or forcibly, artificially create those conditions within the context of the community or thread.Hm.

Also, can we not use the word bimbo? Really? Can we please stop juding a woman on their sexuality? I try very hard not to judge people on their names. I used to when I was younger, but then I grew up. I realize now the problematic, if very human, nature of doing so. The head nurse at my work is named Brttni. She's a talented, classy, intelligent woman and her name fits her. Yet people would judge her name as 'low-class' - it's ridiculous. My own name has been called a 'stripper name,' low-class, etc. It's gaining in popularity and it will be interesting to see if the perception will change. But I can say that it's not a pleasant sensation to see 'stripper name' in regards to my name, and I'm not going to do that.
Good comment, I remember that too.
