I usually like unusual flower names, but this one just sounds like a spitting noise from a 1930s cartoon. “Ptoo!”

It’s got a silly vibe.

I'm not a fan of plant names in general, though some are better than others. Petunia is close to the bottom of the list, especially since my first association is with Harry Potter's awful aunt.

Beautiful flower, ugly name.Well, it depends. If we’re pronouncing it like puh-TUNE-ee-ah, then sure, I find it to be a little pretty. But puh-TUNE-yah isn’t ugly, I just find it to be the same as Gertrude - very frumpy and unpleasant. Not a fan. I love Chloë’s idea for Petunia Maxine and Petunia Chantal.

I'll admit that I wasn't really into Petunia, until I learned that it means "tobacco". That gave it a whole new dimension for me. So now it interests me a lot! I think the nickname "Tunie" would be very cute (although it might be extra strange in Canada, because we call our two dollar coins "toonies"). I like Petunia paired with "tough guy" kinda names, something with an edge (Of course, this is my idea of tough guy, YMMV).Petunia Maxine
Petunia Louise
Petunia Roxanne
Petunia Maureen
Petunia Denise
Petunia Margot
Petunia Francine
Petunia Charmaine
Petunia Chantal
Petunia Christine (like the killer car)

Doesn't that meaning make it an even worse name??

No, tobacco is a sacred plant among many North American Indigenous cultures.

It would be REALLY strange in Canada!

OH I've got it! What about Pete or Petey as a nickname for a Petunia?? I know Petunia doesn't really have the "Pete" sound but it works so well in my mind. It would be so great for a lady-type character who goes by Pete and then you find out it's short for Petunia.

Yes, Petey is my go-to nickname for Petunia. I’ve loved it since encountering it in the film The Man I Love—it’s the name of Ida Lupino’s character.
