I do have a specific acceptation to the made-up spelling dislike though; No specific name examples jump out at me for this, but if parents from a different language and/or cultural background were living in an English-speaking country, and the original spelling of a desired name was difficult for English speakers, so they chose a phonetic spelling... that I understand and can be down for so long as the new spelling isn't too off-the-wall purposely insane.
