I knew girls born in that decade named Shondra, Shaundra, various spellings. I've always thought it was made up of popular sounds (Sandra + Cheryl, Sherry), though it makes sense that people may have seen the name of the Hindu god Chandra somewhere and assumed it was female and also got the pronunciation wrong.
