The Davison's of Hillside, New Jersey are a regular, suburban, middle-class family. Emma Davison is a stay at home mom since having her first child one decade ago. Before that, a waitress. David Davison is a banker for Morgan Bank. Emma and David met in school and were high school sweethearts.
David has an affair with a young intern in the bank's admin department. David decided to leave his old family behind and start a new life with Isabelle, leaving Emma a newly single mother of three.

It's been five years since Emma or the kids had contact with David. Well, besides Jeremy, who showed up on his father's doorstep after an argument with his mother when he was 16. Isabelle argued on his behalf to let him stay, but David would not have it. Jeremy went home and held a new appreciation for his dear mother, whom he knew would never abandon him, despite the hard time that had befallen his family.
Two years ago, Emma was working a double at the diner she was forced to start working at again after David left and ran into an old flame. Their love blossomed and they married a year later. Douglas' wife, Lillian, struggled with mental illness and was taken by a long bout of pneumonia. He brings two children from his prior marriage.
Isabelle also gives birth to two girls.

Laurie falls in love with a childhood friend and also has two children with her.
Lucy gets married to a good friend of Jeremy's.
Douglas' brother and wife tragically pass away in a motor vehicle accident and the Belanger's decide to take in their three children.
The Davison children unwittingly find out that David and Isabelle conceived again when Peter and Ira happen to be enrolled in the same daycare.
Sweet Daisy begins having night terrors and panic attacks in the daytime, convinced that they're real. Emma takes her to their trusted GP and they make the decision to take her to therapy.
