Once upon a time I would have said Eleanor, but as the years have gone by I realized I didn't like this name as much as I originally thought. The appeal was just because it was longer and looked fancier than the other "plain" old-timey names. On it's own, though, without any comparisons? It becomes quite bland to me.
I've grown a newfound appreciation for Mary these past few years. It's short, but it has substance. Sounds crystal clear like a bell. I can now see why it had its staying power.
I choose Mary.
