Nick and Valentina have had five years of relative bliss. Valentina is establishing herself as a skilled interpreter in the community, often translating for major addresses such as town hall meetings and the like. They had a son last year, Thomas, who, according to Valentina, is "like mini-Nick but cuter." To which Nick replies, "No, he's the sunshine version of you."
Val and Tom were playing in the yard while Nick was making dinner (trust me, you do *not* want Valentina in a kitchen), when a hoard of neighborhood kids in pirate hats and eyepatches run over. The leader yells "IT'S HERE, MATEYS!" and the kids begin frantically digging in the middle of the Nelson yard, chanting "Treasure!" over and over again. Tom toddles over to assist at the mention of shinies, and Valentina must act quickly to stop any more harm coming to the poor yard. Nick, seeing the commotion, comes out to assist, barely containing his laughter as he assures everyone there is no gold in the Nelson yard. But they might try across the street at the Beaumont place (Nick and Charlie Beaumont have a bit of a yard competition going on at the moment). All in all, good fun, and the disrupted dirt is easy to replace, though Tom is now infatuated with the idea of treasure and pirates.
(Note to self: Tom will later dye his hair to look like this: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/1900024837174220/ . I rolled dyed hair but my boy is one so not yet)
