I'm surprised by the largely negative response to this name! A while back I asked about the similar Manuela, and fully expected most people to hate it and prefer the more elegant Emmanuelle.
I guess Emmanuelle is pretty long. Emmanuel is too. But, I like them both. There is something so charmingly imperious about them both.
One of my mother's cousins married an Emmanuelle. I remember at the engagement party, the family was very excited about someone with such an exotic, beautiful name marrying into our very boring WASPy clan. Most of us shortened her name to something closer to Manuelle - the beginning "Em" just sort of disappeared.
