I dislike the name James enough, that to me, it isn't really any worse on a girl.
I think of a girl - or a boy, it hardly matters since the name has no sexy at all imo - who is sheltered and nervous, whose parents would wish her to become, say, a corporate lawyer, but she probably won't get into law school. Or want to.
I guess I feel like James is a name that doesn't FIT anyone real.
I do like Jamie for both girls and boys, but not as a nn for James - just as a full name in itself. It's a little bit like James, a slightly clumsy and mediocre air ... but seems less accidentally so, more playful and modest, less high strung and smug than James seems to me.
A gal Jamie who rides horses, I can easily picture.
