It somehow manages to be even more lispy than Ethel and also sounds like both a name brand medication or fuel for one's car. Ethel is one of the most unattractive names out there, and adding more to it to try to add "flare" does it no favors. In fact, it's even worse.

I love Ethel, and Ethelyn is nice too. It does sound like a chemical compound of some sort, but I don't mind that. I also love Ethelinde.

I dislike Ethel at the best of times. Ethelyn is a valiant attempt at cheering it up, but IMV it falls very flat indeed.
