Ella is an elegant woman in a mauve dress, Emma is younger and wears deep purple.
Strangely enough, I've never met an Emma before! I'd definitely prefer Ella for myself; I'm fond of -elle names.
I also prefer Emilia and Emily to Emma.
To cut a long story short: today I want to name my daughter Emma, but it's an oddity, so I'd probably end up naming her Ella and call her Elle.
