If you lower the first vowel, from an i to more like an uh, you get the Afrikaans word for garbage. In spite of that, I've known a couple of local Phyllis people, including an ancestor of my husband's from I think the 1890s. I don't mind it - certainly don't associate it with syphilis! - but if forced to choose, I'd go for Phyllida any day.
