Gideon and
Xanthe were mostly used to receiving bills in the post. Thus,
Xanthe was surprised to find an attractive cream envelope addressed to her in a language she did not speak. She gave the letter to
Gideon, who was proficient in a number of languages. The letter was written in Portuguese, and announced that
Xanthe's father was not, as she was lead to believe, a philandering Portuguese sailor, but a philandering Brazilian Creole owner of sugar fields, who died of a heart attack three years ago. His sister, who inherited the business, spent the time tracking down his numerous bastards, and bestowing small fortunes upon them.
In the span of a week,
Gideon and
Xanthe turned from working numerous jobs, barely scraping by, to part of Harlem's small upper middle class. Thus,
Theo, born three years after
Silas was stillborn, will enjoy a much more luxurious childhood than his mother had.
