I don't know why it's catching on in France and "other countries" as you say. Maybe there's a popular brand with that name or an in increase in people of Japanese ancestry living there? Or using their traditional names?

However, short/two syllable names for girls are trending in Japan, or they were in the last few years: Yui, Kaho, Saki, Kanon, Sana, Miu, Rio, Karen, etc. I hope this answers your question.
