[Opinions] Marigold or Stella
We had originally planned to name our third and last child, Marigold: n/n Goldie. I loved the name but had terrible reactions from every single one of my family members. My sister pronounced it in the most unpleasant tone of voice, "Maree-Gould?!" The way her face twisted in disgusted and the ugly way she pronounced what I thought was such a beautiful sounding name has been heavy on my brain. Keep in mind, I don't love their taste in names, still, it gave me pause. Will Marigold's name leave a bad impression? I want to give our daughter the best chance in life. My husband and I also like the name, Stella, which unfortunately is highly ranked it my state. The name Stella is well liked so far by people that I've shared it with. I think we could name our daughter, Stella Marigold. Can we please have a vote?

Stella!!!!! 🤟🏻I really love Stella! It sounds magical and so celestial. Marigold on the other hand, is good but it's not my style.

Also congrats on your baby! I think Marigold would be an interesting name to see on a child.

Marigold “Goldie” is soooooo much prettier and more interesting than overdone Stella imo! If you plan to call her Goldie most of the time, then it really shouldn’t be a problem. Marigold Stella is lovely and you don’t want to regret not using a name you obviously love. Go with your gut on this one, it’s your daughter after all.

Marigold is a bold name and I imagine it would take a certain personality to pull off. It fits well enough with your other children’s names, but I think Stella might fit slightly better…Stella Marigold is a stunning combo.I hope you are able to get your sister’s reaction out of your head before the baby arrives, it’s not her child. Wait and see which name vibes with bubs more?

Marigold is one of the very few flower names that I do enjoy. It is an established name, never been megapopular but never been restricted to trendy attention-seekers either. Names like Mia, Harper, Luna and Aria are genuinely over the top, but they're all in the top 25. Marigold is far superior to them, and Marigold Stella would be a lovely combo. Stella is serenely beautiful, but there are so many Ella, Isabella, Ellen etc people at present that she might get lost in the crowd.

Well in my honest opinion…I really like the sound of both Marigold and Stella.Marigold is sunny, cheerful, and fun with personality. The flower is beautiful and it reminds me summer and autumn. Golden, cute, but also beautiful. I don’t know what’s up with your sister but Marigold is actually lovely and I would like it see it on somebody. Goldie would be cute as a nickname. Stella is also very ethereal and beautiful. Celestial and gorgeous in its own way. I love how it means “star” and overall it’s a light and good universal name that you can’t really go wrong with. Respectable and fine overall.Personally, Marigold is a little more middle-namey for me. I think it can work as a first name but I have a Neve Marigold in my family and I love her name. It a bit of a cows name, but a good one. Stella I probably wouldn’t use, but it’s still a good name. If you want your daughter to have something a little less unusual and familiar with conscience and WONT provoke an unwanted or necessary reaction, go with Stella. If you don’t really care so much what others think, and you really love the sound and idea of Marigold; Go with Marigold! Marigold Stella is still great. And she can always go by Stella. Even if they’re not a fan of her name they’ll have to get used to it eventually. Maybe she will go by Mari. That said, Stella Marigold is absolutely gorgeous! I love it and would go with that. If she ever wants something to make her stand out a little more, Stella can always go by Marigold. You can always call her Goldie either way! My mom calls me by my middle name sometimes. Maybe make a poll or use Maristella! Good luck!

Okay, so I LOVE Marigold with all my heart, the nickname Goldie is perfect!
Stella is nice. But it’s not in the same league.
So, go with your gut and give your little one the amazing name that is Marigold But otherwise I have two suggestions you’ll like.
Estelle - a variant of Stella, but has an extra sparkle that puts it in the league of Marigold.
Maristella - a perfect combination of the two. Although it does lack the nickname goldie, she could always be Mari or Mattie
Anyway, you have some amazing names, I hope you find the perfect one!

Go with your gut, it seems you prefer Marigold over Stella. Your family doesn't have to love it, it's your baby not theirs! As long as you two like it that's what matters. And it's still a somewhat known flower name too it's not like your naming her Chrysanthemum, Delphinium, Zephyrlily, Hyacinth or Floxglove lol!*I'd probably still consider 4 or those 5 tbh though if it was me but I'm eccentric lmfao

If I met a baby Marigold, I'd be ecstatic. It's a beautiful and underused name. I love the connection to the flower, and the nn Goldie is too cute. I'm sorry your family wasn't more supportive. Stella is pretty too, and Stella Marigold is a gorgeous combo. But Stella leaves less of an impression in my opinion. It blends in with all the Ellas and names that end in -ella such as Isabella, Gabriella, Annabella, etc. That's not necessarily a bad thing. It just depends what's important to you and what you want in a name.I find it's helpful to make a poll because, generally, I know in my heart which name or combo I want to see win the poll. And if one wins, and I feel disappointed, then I know which name I truly prefer. You could always combine the two and use Maristella or Maristela.

Thank you Dianatiger and sambchop! You're right, Marigold is our preference, but we are truly torn after bringing it up to people. If people, in general, think the name is so ridiculous and "dumb," as one so delicately called it, what will an employer think? What will her peers think? Will people assume based on her name alone? This is what's been keeping me up at night. I'll be super interested what other people say about the name good or bad. I appreciate your input. Sam, I really like how you said that "Stella" doesn't leave an impression like "Marigold." I feel the same way. Stella is pretty but Marigold sounds elegant and cool to me. I like your ideas: Maristella/Maristela, I'll run it by my husband. My baby is very likey to be a redhead like me and my son. How cool would a curly redheaded Marigold be? *Swoon*Also.. sorry about my typos everyone! I'm the typo queen. :). Also.. please feel free to give me a reality check if you guys dislike Marigold or just prefer Stella.

I would hire a Marigold. You have to remember: the naming pool as a whole that generation is significantly more eccentric & diverse as a whole. By the time she is old enough to fill out job applications, her potential employers won't even bat an eye at it compared to some of the names of her same aged peers. Would Marigold be weird 25 or 30 years ago? Yes. Present day? I'm shocked by very little after all the "bad" names I have heard. Remember the crowd she will grow up apart of.
