The Abravanels live in an apartment in New York City, New York. Yedidyah and Châu are both immigrants - Yedidyah coming from a Sephardim community in Cuba, and Châu from Thái Bình, Vietnam. Yedidyah is a paramedic, and Châu is a technician at a pathology lab. The eldest son, Judah, has a pet rat named Azazel. The youngest, Ezri, is an adventurous little boy who loves running through the park and dancing in the rain. The family have an old yellow beetle, which they call Carla.
