Liljana and her family came to Germany from Slovenia when she was 12: although she intially struggled to learn the new language, she eventually excelled academically and went on to study law and is now a newly-qualified criminal prosecutor. Her new husband, Anatoli, grew up in Georgia, and came to Germany aged 18 in order to study art in Munich. He sells his beautiful, dreamlike paintings - although not as often as he would like - and as Munich is an expensive city, he runs art classes in order to help make ends meet. He and Liljana have been dating since their first year of university, where they met at a mutual friend's party.

Liljana has been vegetarian since she was a teenager: this year, she finally persuades Anatoli to become a vegetarian too. Liljana has to take several weeks off work after being laid low by a nasty bout of the flu.

Figuring that they may as well get the early years out of the way while they can, Liljana and Anatoli try for a second baby. When their first ultrasound shows them two little blobs, Liljana almost faints, although Anatoli is delighted. Liljana stays home for a little longer after Tobi and Seb are born, because three under two is a lot for Anatoli to manage on his own, but she returns to work in due time. This causes a pretty nasty argument between her and Anatoli, who absolutely loves children and can hardly understand why Liljana would want to be out of the house so much. She goes to stay with her parents for a few days while things cool down, and the two make up again.

After going through a bad break-up, Liljana's younger sister Mateja stays with the family for a few weeks while she gets herself back on her feet. Oskar loves having someone new to play with, and even the bouncy, child-loving Anatoli is grateful to have someone else around for a while.

The whole family is forced to camp out in Liljana's parents' living room for several weeks after heavy flooding guts much of the lower floor of their house. Luckily, the structural damage isn't severe, and they eventually move back home. This gives Anatoli the seed of inspiration he needs in order to start writing his own graphic novel.

Year 7 - Munich, Germany
Liljana gets a promotion, and starts handling more, higher-profile cases. The money is good, but consequently she's almost never home, and it puts a terrible strain on her relationship with Anatoli. Finally, after Liljana sleeps in her office for three nights in a row and misses Oskar's first day at school, Anatoli makes his mind up and ends their relationship. He tries to do so gently, and the two of them stay on amicable terms. Liljana agrees to move out of the house and into an apartment nearer the city centre (and her workplace). The boys will stay with her some weekends, and over school holidays, but Anatoli is the natural choice for their primary carer.

Anatoli receives substantial child support payments from Liljana, but nonetheless realises that simply selling his art is not going to be enough to keep himself and the boys afloat. He gets a job as a clerk at a nearby bank branch - nothing thrilling, but in conjunction with Liljana's money it's enough to pay the bills. He does keep working on his graphic novel in his spare time, though. Liljana finds herself going through a tough time - she misses Anatoli and their full household, and at the beginning of the new year, her father dies after a stroke. She throws herself into her work more than ever to compensate.

Anatoli meets Nina Andreev, a German social worker of Russian descent, at an art fair in Munich. He's upfront about the fact that he has four children; she's honest about the fact that she loves children and would like some of her own one day. She gets on well with the boys, and is friendly enough towards Liljana the first time they meet. Liljana, meanwhile, has her mother come to stay with her for several weeks around the first anniversary of her father's death - she can't bear to think of her being alone, and the boys enjoy spending some time with their Bábica.

Although they weren't exactly intent on conceiving, Anatoli and Nina haven't been doing a lot to prevent it, and they're pretty thrilled when Nina's pregnancy test comes back positive. Their delight turns into giddy shock when the doctor informs Nina that she's carrying twins, a girl and a boy - Tobi and Seb are rather upset that they're no longer special. Nonetheless, Klaudia and Adrian are doted on by their rather protective older brothers. Early in Nina's pregnancy, she and Anatoli decided that they may as well get married, and they tied the knot in a small ceremony.

Much to her surprise, Liljana finds herself pregnant after a one night stand with a friend. Now that her boys are older, she feels able to care for another child full-time, and so decides to keep the baby. Her friend, Florian, tells her that he'll do everything he can to help her raise the baby - by the end of her pregnancy, the pair have started a romantic relationship. There's clearly something in the water in Munich, because Liljana also gives birth to twins, and is delighted to have the daughter(s) she's always longed for.
Now that she's a mother, Nina decides she wants to work from home. She quits her job and enrolls in a year-long online training course which will allow her to work remotely as an accountant when she finishes it. In an exciting development, Anatoli gets a publishing deal for his beloved graphic novel, a semi-autobiographical story of a young father displaced from his home by a terrible flood. The extra cash is much appreciated in the household.

Nina begins working as an accountant; the money she earns there is good enough that Anatoli is able to go part-time at the bank and begin running art classes again, as well as working on the second volume of his graphic novel. Liljana is devastated when her mother passes away, and Anatoli brings Oskar, Tobi, Seb, and Oli to the funeral to say goodbye to Bábica. This brings Liljana and Anatoli closer together than they have been for a long time, and their two families begin spending more time together - if nothing else, it's helpful to let their respective sets of twins run off some of their energy together.

The Galashvili's poorly-located home is again severely flooded. The older boys go to stay with their Mama and Florian, while Anatoli and Nina stay with the twins at Nina's parents' home. After a couple of months, their home is habitable again, and Anatoli and Nina begin looking at what they could do to make it more flood-proof. Not long after the boys go home, however, Liljana is devastated to come back from work one day and find that Florian has taken his stuff and moved out, leaving only a note explaining that he felt Liljana's family life was too complicated, and things weren't working out for them. He pays child support for Selina and Leonie, but it's still difficult for the career-oriented Liljana to care for twin toddlers on her own. Despite their own full house, Anatoli and Nina offer to look after Selina and Leonie for a few hours after daycare during the week in order to make things easier on Liljana.

Anatoli and Nina hadn't planned on any more children, but then Dominik happens. Klaudia is so over her household full of boys, and is always happy for a chance to have a playdate with Selina and Leonie. It's a terrible blow for everyone when Liljana comes over and tells Anatoli and Nina that her firm has offered her a job in London. The benefits are excellent, and would make caring for her twins much easier. After a long, difficult conversation with her boys, it's agreed that Liljana should take the job. They'll miss their Mama, but they're excited to go on trips to London to see her in the school holidays.

Oskar has always been a quiet, academic boy who enjoyed almost every aspect of his education - now that the time has come for him to begin narrowing down the subjects he studies, he's struggling to make the choice. Eventually, he decides that he wants to focus on science and technology. Liljana and the girls are settling down well in London, and the twins have started primary school in England at a private international school. Their grasp of English is shaky but improving rapidly every day.

Selina and Leonie become close friends with Theo Halley, an English girl whose dad is the coach of a high-ranking tennis player. She and Mark grow closer over the year, and eventually he asks her out on a date. Selina, Leonie, and Theo are delighted at the thought of becoming sisters, and Mark takes visits from Liljana's boys in his stride, despite their sometimes-shaky English. Back in Germany, Adrian decides that he wants to be an artist like his Papa, and begins practising in earnest. To Anatoli's delight, he shows a natural talent for art, and continues to work hard at it.

Just before his term starts, Liljana and Mark come over to Munich for a family reunion/farewell party/40th birthday celebration for Nina - Mark and Theo meet Klaudia, Adrian, Lukas, and Dominik for the first time and they manage some semblance of a conversation between English and German.

Liljana and Anatoli decide that they'd like a daughter, and so try once more for a baby. They end up with a fourth boy, Oli, who inherits his mother's shock of red hair. Thankfully, the situation at home is manageable now that Oskar has started nursery, although he's not exactly happy there and often cries for his Papa.

Year 6 - Munich, Germany
The whole family is forced to camp out in Liljana's parents' living room for several weeks after heavy flooding guts much of the lower floor of their house. Luckily, the structural damage isn't severe, and they eventually move back home. This gives Anatoli the seed of inspiration he needs in order to start writing his own graphic novel.

Year 7 - Munich, Germany
Liljana gets a promotion, and starts handling more, higher-profile cases. The money is good, but consequently she's almost never home, and it puts a terrible strain on her relationship with Anatoli. Finally, after Liljana sleeps in her office for three nights in a row and misses Oskar's first day at school, Anatoli makes his mind up and ends their relationship. He tries to do so gently, and the two of them stay on amicable terms. Liljana agrees to move out of the house and into an apartment nearer the city centre (and her workplace). The boys will stay with her some weekends, and over school holidays, but Anatoli is the natural choice for their primary carer.

Anatoli receives substantial child support payments from Liljana, but nonetheless realises that simply selling his art is not going to be enough to keep himself and the boys afloat. He gets a job as a clerk at a nearby bank branch - nothing thrilling, but in conjunction with Liljana's money it's enough to pay the bills. He does keep working on his graphic novel in his spare time, though. Liljana finds herself going through a tough time - she misses Anatoli and their full household, and at the beginning of the new year, her father dies after a stroke. She throws herself into her work more than ever to compensate.

Anatoli meets Nina Andreev, a German social worker of Russian descent, at an art fair in Munich. He's upfront about the fact that he has four children; she's honest about the fact that she loves children and would like some of her own one day. She gets on well with the boys, and is friendly enough towards Liljana the first time they meet. Liljana, meanwhile, has her mother come to stay with her for several weeks around the first anniversary of her father's death - she can't bear to think of her being alone, and the boys enjoy spending some time with their Bábica.

Although they weren't exactly intent on conceiving, Anatoli and Nina haven't been doing a lot to prevent it, and they're pretty thrilled when Nina's pregnancy test comes back positive. Their delight turns into giddy shock when the doctor informs Nina that she's carrying twins, a girl and a boy - Tobi and Seb are rather upset that they're no longer special. Nonetheless, Klaudia and Adrian are doted on by their rather protective older brothers. Early in Nina's pregnancy, she and Anatoli decided that they may as well get married, and they tied the knot in a small ceremony.

Much to her surprise, Liljana finds herself pregnant after a one night stand with a friend. Now that her boys are older, she feels able to care for another child full-time, and so decides to keep the baby. Her friend, Florian, tells her that he'll do everything he can to help her raise the baby - by the end of her pregnancy, the pair have started a romantic relationship. There's clearly something in the water in Munich, because Liljana also gives birth to twins, and is delighted to have the daughter(s) she's always longed for.
Now that she's a mother, Nina decides she wants to work from home. She quits her job and enrolls in a year-long online training course which will allow her to work remotely as an accountant when she finishes it. In an exciting development, Anatoli gets a publishing deal for his beloved graphic novel, a semi-autobiographical story of a young father displaced from his home by a terrible flood. The extra cash is much appreciated in the household.

Nina begins working as an accountant; the money she earns there is good enough that Anatoli is able to go part-time at the bank and begin running art classes again, as well as working on the second volume of his graphic novel. Liljana is devastated when her mother passes away, and Anatoli brings Oskar, Tobi, Seb, and Oli to the funeral to say goodbye to Bábica. This brings Liljana and Anatoli closer together than they have been for a long time, and their two families begin spending more time together - if nothing else, it's helpful to let their respective sets of twins run off some of their energy together.

The Galashvili's poorly-located home is again severely flooded. The older boys go to stay with their Mama and Florian, while Anatoli and Nina stay with the twins at Nina's parents' home. After a couple of months, their home is habitable again, and Anatoli and Nina begin looking at what they could do to make it more flood-proof. Not long after the boys go home, however, Liljana is devastated to come back from work one day and find that Florian has taken his stuff and moved out, leaving only a note explaining that he felt Liljana's family life was too complicated, and things weren't working out for them. He pays child support for Selina and Leonie, but it's still difficult for the career-oriented Liljana to care for twin toddlers on her own. Despite their own full house, Anatoli and Nina offer to look after Selina and Leonie for a few hours after daycare during the week in order to make things easier on Liljana.

Anatoli and Nina hadn't planned on any more children, but then Dominik happens. Klaudia is so over her household full of boys, and is always happy for a chance to have a playdate with Selina and Leonie. It's a terrible blow for everyone when Liljana comes over and tells Anatoli and Nina that her firm has offered her a job in London. The benefits are excellent, and would make caring for her twins much easier. After a long, difficult conversation with her boys, it's agreed that Liljana should take the job. They'll miss their Mama, but they're excited to go on trips to London to see her in the school holidays.

Oskar has always been a quiet, academic boy who enjoyed almost every aspect of his education - now that the time has come for him to begin narrowing down the subjects he studies, he's struggling to make the choice. Eventually, he decides that he wants to focus on science and technology. Liljana and the girls are settling down well in London, and the twins have started primary school in England at a private international school. Their grasp of English is shaky but improving rapidly every day.

Selina and Leonie become close friends with Theo Halley, an English girl whose dad is the coach of a high-ranking tennis player. Her mum passed away not long after she was born, leaving her dad Mark a widower. Mark often travels to tournaments with his mentee - it seems natural for Liljana to offer to look after her daughters' best friend for a week or two at a time. She and Mark grow closer over the year, and eventually he asks her out on a date. Selina, Leonie, and Theo are delighted at the thought of becoming sisters, and Mark takes visits from Liljana's boys in his stride, despite their sometimes-shaky English. Back in Germany, Adrian decides that he wants to be an artist like his Papa, and begins practising in earnest. To Anatoli's delight, he shows a natural talent for art, and continues to work hard at it.

Anatoli is forced to cancel all his art classes for a few weeks after a nasty lung infection lays him low. Luckily, he makes a full recovery, and is back to wrestling with Lukas and Dominik before long. Over in England, Liljana receives another promotion for her excellent work.

Just before his term starts, Liljana and Mark come over to Munich for a family reunion/farewell party/40th birthday celebration for Nina - Mark and Theo meet Klaudia, Adrian, Lukas, and Dominik for the first time and they manage some semblance of a conversation between English and German.

Tobi stays in Munich to study finance, but moves out of the family home and rents a flat about half an hour away. Seb, a talented violinist, is accepted into a prestigious music school in Vienna where he will study classical composition.
