The year we last visited the Edwards, Jesse and Ida divorced. Ida died soon after of an unspecified illness. Two years later, Jesse dies of fever. Two years after that, Kate meets a newly immigrated Navajo man, Tahoma Preston. He is the same age as her and they have both lost siblings. The two quickly fall in love and get engaged. Robert does not approve of the union but the two lovebirds won't take no for an answer. The run away suddenly and get married before Robert can stop them. The following year, Harry gets engaged then married to a newly immigrated Navajo woman named Doli Robson. Doli is like Peggy in many respects, and does not mind marrying the lord, even if he is forty years her senior. She and Robert have become friends, and Harry doesn't mind if their bond grows past friendship. He just wants Peggy in his life again.
