As a middle name it's okay
If this family used Joseph as a middle name because it is a family name or has great significance to them, then I think it's fantastic. To often people use such cutsey middle names for girls. If Joseph has meaning to them, then it's great to use as a middle name, and J works well as an inital.

As these names become more popular (something to do with celebrity's picking them, probably) I think they will become more commonly used and then people will be less likely to associate them with the celebrities who made them popular in the first place. However, maddening as it is, this is the way of the world in naming trends. I have had favorites ousted because of their rising popularity just as you've questioned whether to use names because they are associated with celebs. Many of us won't use names that our families don't like. There are lots of reasons to select, or not select, a name for your child. As long as one can live with the consequences of their child being Emma P. or River-no-not-after-Phoenix, then that is what matters.

true. :). I could live with the River thing, i mean it's not a bad association really well except for the overdose thing...lol.

I don't think it's fair that people just assume others are just obessed fans of someone just because they use the names of celeb/celeb kids, sibsets etc.
...Yeah, and? Unfortunately, that's how life works.
A name isn't unusable just because a celebrity or a celebrity's child bears it--but if you like a name very heavily associated with a celebrity, you're going to have to understand that other people are going to make the association. If you can't handle that, it just means you'll have to find a different name to like.
Which is not to berate you but just to point out--if you really dislike people associating River with Phoenix, you're either going to have to learn to smile and nod or find some other way to honour God.

I don't mind people associating with River Phoenix at all. It's just when I said it's not for him, they kind of give me that "yeah right" look, that's what was concerning me. :) Thanks for your reply....

That is something that sucks, doesn't it? Literally the day before it was announced that some celebrity had a daughter whose name included Bebop, I was thinking to myself, "Bebop would be kind of cool as a name for a boy--if nothing else, it'd work better than Hot Jazz, Fusion, or Straight Ahead." I ended up dropping that idea like a hot potato, lol!

LOL, I was thinking along the same lines!
I have 9 cousins, 4 of whom have beaten me to having children. Not that I'm racing full-speed ahead or anything. One of them took my all-time favorite girl name. *sigh* The others had blah names, or actual ICK names, so I think I'm ok for now.
As long as I don't mention my favorite names in front of anyone in my family, I think I might actually get to use the rest of my list...
