[Opinions] Re: Today's Name of the Day: Diana
Di is what puts me right off. Diana itself is pretty and also dignified, and would make a good mn. Unlike the majority of people on this planet, I was no admirer of Princess Diana and I totally loathed the whole 'Princess Di' nonsense: same as with Prince William's wife now. Nobody who knows her has ever called her Kate, but Katherine doesn't fit comfortably into headlines, so Kate she has become. I'm happy about Diane in its natural habitat, but where I live it sounds like die-ANN and I don't like it, though Dianne is worse. I knew Diana people and Diane people at school, but not many. I had a British colleague once who was called Dee, and I assumed she was Diane or Diana, but she was actually Dinah: she'd been called Di until she was a teenager and read Kafka! She then insisted on being called by her initial ... like Kafka's character, K. Her husband's name was Don, and they sounded like two Scottish rivers.
