While the Kingdom of Northumbria was going from strength to strength, the life of its ruling family has been very turbulent. Three years ago King Henry lost his wife Cassandra to a bad case of smallpox, luckily no one else in family caught it but the grief was enormous. At his wife’s deathbed Henry vowed to himself to never marry again, but mere year later stood in front of the altar marrying Flavienne old-maiden daughter of his ally Count Ghyslain of the Franks. Flavienne, as Henry likes to say, is a beautiful soul who serves the people of Northumbria well, but can never fill the empty place in Henry’s heart after Cassandra’s premature departure.
At the age of twenty Crown Prince Nicholas got betrothed to Princess Adora of Aragon, the only daughter of King Josepe and Queen Petrona of Aragon. Nicholas has been mesmerized by the Princess from the first moment, while Adora took the betrothal with a stoic face once her father delivered the news. She did not find Nicholas particularly attractive and the life in rainy Northumbria was not something to look forward to either, but her upbringing has taught her to keep those opinions to herself and since the age of fifteen she has been dutifully preparing herself for her role of the future Queen of Northumbria.
A year into the betrothal in a series of unfortunate events both King Josepe of Aragon and his only son Crown Prince Valente lost their lives in a span of two weeks, suddenly leaving Adora as the only heir to the Aragon throne. Under the new circumstances the union of Nicholas and Adora was out of question as Aragon needed a King for its Queen. The betrothal of Nicholas and Adora was quietly called off and a new betrothal was announced between Henry’s younger son Prince Edmund and now Queen Adora of Aragon. The wedding preparations are in full force as Edmund and Adora will marry in person on the day of Adora’s eighteenth birthday, while still arranged this is a union that Adora is looking forward to and so is Edmund.
Maud has been so far the only victim of her father’s marriage politics as she got betrothed to King Ercole of Venice. Ercole is ten years her senior and his reputation is not very good, but the Kingdom of Venice is much needed ally for Henry, so he is willing to sacrifice his only daughter’s happiness for it. Maud is already dreading the wedding that should take place in few years time.
