Ahab Perseus Reid, the only child of two professors (one of English literature, the other of Classics) and Magdalene Prudence Belmont, fifth daughter of devoutly Catholic middle class parents, met at university, where they were both studying history. They quickly became good friends, and married when they were 27.

---

Ahab is imposing and prematurely greying, with an aquiline nose and clever, colourless eyes. His small wire spectacles enlarge them visually, giving him the appearance of a particularly sturdy insect. His smile is wide and disarming, if vaguely ironic. He has an elegant aquiline nose and a cleft chin. His skin is rosy and tans well.

His wife, Magdalene, is tall and wry, with coffee-brown eyes and a luxurious mane of chestnut hair, which she arranges in interesting and varied coiffures. She has a strong jaw, wide lips, and a slightly upturned nose. Her skin is pale and she applies thick layers of sunscreen even in the winter, so as to avoid sunburns.

Before our main character was born, they had two children: the elder, Magdalena, was, of course, named after her mother, while her middle name honoured the Shakespearean heroine. They decided to give her and all her siblings her mother's surname, as they thought it worked better with most given names than Reid did.

---

Their son, Hildebrand, followed two years later, his first name nothing but an intellectual whimsy, which he carries surprisingly well, and his middle name honouring Magdalene's beloved Peter Pan.

---

Today, however, Ahab and Magdalene celebrate the birth of their second daughter, who will, undoubtedly, become the main character of this narrative. In a shockingly conventional manner, they bestowed the first name Sophia on her. They allowed her older siblings to choose her middle name, and as Ahab had just finished reading them Coraline as a bedtime story, the choice was obvious.

Sophia looks, so far, very much like a newborn: fat and large eyed and mostly bald, with a few wisps of dark hair. However, my prophetic abilities allow me to say she'll inherit her father's premature greying and her mother's deep brown eyes and pale skin.

In a tragic turn of events, Mabel dies in an accident after falling out of a tree. Sophia, while still quite young, quickly understands that her sister is not coming back, and has trouble sleeping, plagued by nightmares of falling out of trees.

Ahab was supposed to go on a road trip around the UK with only Magdalena and Hildebrand, to show off his knowledge of architecture and instill a love of history in them, but Sophia insisted on joining them. While her older siblings rolled their eyes at first, it proved a wonderful bonding activity, with Sophia discovering her fascination for architecture and Magdalena forcing everyone to listen to death metal for the entirety of the trip.
