John Cyrillus Carter is a somewhat self-important but very talented blacksmith and farrier living in Leeds, UK. In 1826, at the age of 22, he meets 20-year-old Adamantine Drusilla "Addie" Hill, a physician's daughter, and they fall in love quickly. The two are fairly well-off and get married in 1827. The two purchase a modest yet beautiful home in the city. During the day, Addie Carter mends clothing items for a small fee and attends teas in the afternoon with several good friends of hers. Only a year after their marriage, Addie gives birth to Robert Septimus Carter, a beautiful baby boy with curly brown hair.

A year after Robert's birth, Adamantine Carter finds out she is pregnant once again. In the spring of 1830, John and Addie welcome Archibald John, their second son. The family mourns - Addie was especially fond of her mother and misses her dearly. Addie's father, Dr. Leonidas Hill, is also grieved and moves to Leeds to be nearer to his daughter, his only surviving child. Dr. Hill becomes a household presence and a wonderful grandfather to Robert and Archie.

Over the next few years, Addie Carter gives birth to another healthy baby, a girl. They name her Mary Adeliza "Liza". The family is thrilled - they feel complete with so many children in their home, even though money has become a little more tight as the children have aged. Addie begins dressmaking in the family's attic to earn a little extra money, and in 1837, she becomes pregnant again, this time with twins. The birth process is arduous, but Addie eventually gives birth to two small babies, a boy and a girl. Addie never fully recovers from the birth and passes away three months later. The family is devastated and ten-year-old Robert leaves school to begin peddling newspapers on the street.

He now co-owns the blacksmith shop with his father, who is getting older and finds it harder to work. Robert and Sina have only one child together: a brilliant and evidently intelligent girl named Annabella Frances. Robert Carter sends his daughter to a special girls' boarding school to learn mathematics and science. She thrives there and develops an interest in chemistry. When she graduates, she begins reading scientific journals and is apprenticed to a scientist and professor in Cologne, Germany, who is willing to allow her to use his laboratory. She becomes heavily influential in the sphere of science, despite her gender, publishing most of her findings under her professor's name.
