Agree with Ani, it's both. It's both too old and too modern in the same breathe.
Grace Jones is an interesting reminder. Secondarily after my namesake Grace Kelly, I will think of Gracie Allen and George Burns.
I have a complicated relationship with my name. I both love it and think it is completely me but also sometimes think it isn't me at all. Grace could be a wide variety of people imo, but mostly what comes to mind, to me, is blonde, very slim, very beautiful women who are high born and well read, and of course elegant and "graceful". That is a LOT for anybody to live up to. People have expressed expectations of me being anything from beauty queen to skillful musician to poised dancer to craftfully witty. And though I am pretty but I'm more "Veronica" to Grace's "Betty". (See Betty vs Veronica Trope) I have my talents but I've never been exceptionally talented at anything. And forget graceful, I trip when I'm out walking.
As a child it wasn't quite as popular again yet so people would tell me it was pretty and you didn't hear it as much anymore. There was only 1 other Grace in my K-12 school and she was a lot older than I. That made me feel special and unique. But that came to an end once I was about middle school aged and it shot up in popularity again within my region.
I've never really "fully" identified with my name and as I've expressed previously have considered changing it multiple occasions as a result. I've actually met several Grace's besides myself whom the name seemingly suited a lot better.
Grace also has a hyper religious aura around it. Though my mom named me for the princess my father agreed only because of the religious connections and arguments for it. That can have it's own issues in a way. For me particularly since I'm not as religious anymore and more spiritual in nature. It's like a coat that you put on for the first time in 10 years. It still technically fits but the style isn't who you are anymore.
That said, I'm truly tired of Grace as a middle name. It's so trite it makes me role my eyes. As a first? I think it has it's place. It Definitely needs to slow down a bit but I still like my name in moderation. If I only met 1 Grace for every several hundred people I met I would be content.
I would be hard pressed to name a daughter after myself these days. As a teenager I gave serious consideration to just flipping my own name around and name a daughter Diana Grace, but now that Grace is so popular a middle it's lost it's appeal. I had also considered Grace Catherine back then. Would I still use it? Not likely. Tbh children deserve their own identity imo.
Anyways this reply was way too long, sorry! Lmao
Please rate my "Names I would Use" list & "Backup Favorites" list. Feel free to rate some of my other lists too if you have the time.
