My birth ln is a form of David. I didn't mind it as a ln, ditched it when I married because I could get better initials that way (!), and used David as my son's mn without hesitation. Where I live, I haven't seen a young David for a very long time. This is a pity: I find it attractive, and Dave is fine as a nn. My uncle by marriage, David, was called Davy by his wife and I didn't like that at all.
