I'm in the US. I was actually thinking of Katie today - that it seems sweeter to me than it used to, though isn't a fav.
It's old-fashioned, cutesy. I like it more than Kitty or Sadie. I guess if I liked Katie, I'd stick with that or Katherine.
Catriona / Catrina is my favorite form of Catherine, but I'd pick Cat as a NN for any of those. I also prefer Kathleen to Katie and don't think of that as a NN or in need of a NN.
