Are the friends also Chinese? Otherwise I can't see how they'd know enough about Chinese names to pick a suitable one. Also, name changes are pretty personal decisions, did the character ask them to pick a name for them?
I can't say much about these since I don't know the pronunciation; Rúxīn looks nice and has a nice meaning, but according to Google 如新 is the name of a company also called "Nu Skin".

those symbols literally mean 'like new' so I can see why a skin care company used it, lol.
And ...yes? They 'consent' to a name change - it was their idea. The two characters picking the name aren't native Chinese no, but it's the 21st century; they have internet + library + another friend who DOES speak Chinese.
