I appreciate the now-archived discussion about the pronunciation of the name THAIS. I've been looking for someone who knows how the name would've been pronounced in the day of Alexander the Great, with whom the most popular historical Thais hung out. My parents call me "THAY-iss", but in later years I've encouraged people to pronounce it "Tah-EESE" as in the French opera. My dad is on a semi-humorous campaign to prove that it should be pronounced "THAY-iss." The one greek who responded to the earlier thread said it should be "Thah-EESE", the th being pronounced as in the work "think". Does anyone else know whether the ancients would have said the same?
